BlackBerry needs a real change

Necessary but not sufficient. The idea of appointing a new chairman of the board at the head of Research in Motion (RIM), maker of the BlackBerry, as suggested by the rumors, Tuesday, January 3, going in the right direction. But the Canadian group may need a more profound disruption of its governance out of the rut.

According to the website of the Canadian daily, National Post, Barbara Stymiest, could take in the coming days the chairmanship of the board of the group. This 55 year old woman, who chaired TSX, the owner of the Toronto Stock Exchange and held important responsibilities at the Royal Bank of Canada seems well qualified for this position now shared by the two founders of RIM, Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, and they combine with the office of Executive Director. This choice is even more legitimate, that Ms. Stymiest is on the Board of Directors of RIM since 2007 and therefore knows by heart the reasons why the capitalization of the group to melt three quarters in a year.

The problem is that no part of the two founders may be a sham. Indeed, Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, who together hold 10% stake and still have not found the key problems besetting BlackBerry. If they remain in control operations, the presence of Ms. Stymiest is likely to be of little weight to reverse the trend.

Attacked from all sides of the smartphone market, the brand is becoming more like the weak link of the sector with the capacity for innovation and adaptation of Apple, Google and Samsung. There is one further year, the BlackBerry was number one in the U.S. with 33% market share. It has since been halved. The situation worsened in the fall of 2011 because of a massive failure of its servers. Its image with its customers still largely made up of companies, it has been greatly damaged.

The pattern of the arrival of a new president, if it is confirmed, risk will not be at stake. Apparently, the duo Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie would remain in the landscape, the problems faced by RIM as well.
