China Telecom launches in the UK market

The operator China Telecom has signed Wednesday, January 4, a partnership with Everything Everywhere , the joint venture mobile activities of France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom in the UK, to launch in the UK market of the mobile. “This is the first time a Chinese telecom operator launched services as mobile virtual operator [MVNO or without own network] outside of China ” , said a statement.

With this initiative, China Telecom intends to create a ” Silk Road of information ” and enjoy the windfall of “roaming”, that is to say, the use of the mobile device outside of its territory of origin. In fact, the supply developed by China Telecom has targeted the Chinese community in the UK, as well as “visitors to the country as students and tourists” who want to stay in contact with China. The operator also intends to take advantage of the Olympic Games to be held from July 27 to August 12 in London.

Mann of “roaming”

China Telecom is the incumbent telecommunications operator in China. He is the first fixed-line operator, and with nearly 110 million subscribers, the third for the mobile. “China Telecom since 2006 has an infrastructure in Europe securely connected to Asia by different routes from either the Kazakhstan or Dubai … He announced his desire to grow through acquisitions ” , analysis Sebastien Crozier, director of strategy and innovation at France Telecom-Orange, on his blog .

In October, Orange has signed an agreement with China Telecom Framework strategic partnership to improve services offered to corporate clients in their respective regions. “It is certain that an offer of MVNO China Telecom may be the prelude targeted acquisitions that will make China Telecom a leading European telecom of the future ” , said Mr Crozier.

But the agreement in the UK also shows that the Chinese domestic market of mobile telephony is becoming more competitive. In May, China United , the second operator in China, had already significantly reduced the cost of “roaming”.

The battle between the Chinese operators could also be playing also outside of Europe. China Telecom has already set in other countries, like Canada, Vietnam and Indonesia. In November, Bloomberg reported that China Telecom could also launch a mobile service in the U.S.
