Facebook buys geolocation service Gowalla
The founders of the service to the application of location-based Gowalla announced , Monday, Dec. 5, they would stop this service, then they will join the website Facebook, which bought the company. “We are delighted to announce that we will make the trip to California to join Facebook ” , said co-founder of the service Josh Williams on the official blog of the Texas company, the rival New York Foursquare. The terms of the transaction, which was confirmed by Facebook, have not been specified.
“Facebook does not buy the service or technology Gowalla, but we are sure that the inspiration which led to Gowalla ‘s gonna express in Facebook ” , said a spokesman for Facebook. In fact, Josh Williams said Gowalla, launched two years ago, was arrested in late January, and users will be instructed to keep the data and photos assigned to the site.
SERVICES IN FRANCE still unknown
As Foursquare, Gowalla allows mobile users to make know their whereabouts. The service launched in Austin, the capital of Texas, also allows to add pictures and comments on where you are. Facebook in turn launched last year its own geolocation service, “Places”, which allows mobile users to report , for example in restaurants or bars.
But what types of services still struggling to find its users in France. According to a study of the FIFG, published in late 2010, 65% of respondents have a geolocation system. But they are mainly GPS in cars. Computer applications such as Facebook Places , Foursquare and Gowalla are ignored by 73% of respondents.
