Google Maps: Google convicted in France for abuse of dominant position


The Commercial Court of Paris ordered Google and its French subsidiary for abuse of dominant position, Wednesday 1 st February. The giant American Internet company was opposed to the Cartographers Directory, which provides compensation against access plans, location maps and directions online.

In this respect , it considered that the Google Maps distort the rules of free competition by offering the same service to businesses while she undergoes costs to develop its product. In its ruling, the court sentenced to include Google pay 500,000 euros in damages to the French mapping company, and 15,000 euros fine. The court also ordered the judgment be published in the daily Wall Street Journal , Herald Tribune , Le Monde , Le Figaro , La Tribune and Les Echos .

For its part, Google said it was going to appeal the ruling. “We remain convinced that a mapping tool for high quality, free and unrestricted, is beneficial both for users and for website owners. Competition on this sector remains real for us, both in France and abroad ” , responded a spokesman for the group.
