How Apple Iphone is changing the landscape of the market and what to do to airlines?

The dazzling success of the iPhone has revolutionized the world, in fact, the next generation of mobile phones. Before the debut of the iPhone, Touch phones are to be had, at best, a good function. For example, resisitant screens have always available on Windows Mobile phones, but this was not the case. We prefer a physical keyboard and a pen. Apple changed the game when it launched its first generation of iPhone 2G/Edge.

We are impressed by the comfort of touch and the ease of zooming in and out of web pages by panning, and pinching with your fingers. The display provides capacitive touch screen mobile phone to a new level. (See here for more details on how the screen works capacitive:

Since then we have seen a lot of phones available Similar to the touch and accelerometer functions as the iPhone. I said similar, not because so far I have a phone that offers the same level of sophistication in testing his touch and accelerometer features (see my other posts on models of the newer phones). G1 and Storm are close competitors in this aspect of the iPhone – it lacks many other features iPhone today – as a expandable slot, MMS, copy and paste, to name a few). If you may recall, Samsung Omnia had a good degree of success, particularly in countries where the 3G iPhone was / will be launched later Omnia has. Now almost all major mobile phone manufacturers Nokia Sony Ericsson HTC Touch phones are have their series. I do not want too much in each of these phones, because it is not the purpose of this paper. I thought it was healthy for the market. Now we have more choice. Apple has in fact caused a sudden change in competitive landscape in just two years. It has surpassed even the sale of the second RIM smartphone. Of course, now with Verizon launches Storm, we have still to be seen how this will happen.

The iPhone is not just on the phone. In fact, the iPhone brings with it an ecosystem – the iTunes. If you’re a BlackBerry user, especially if you have a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) of a company are you most applications, you can buy and download it to your BlackBerry. There are two reasons. First, the range of applications and some limited measures to prohibit the installation of third party applications. Second, the applications are relatively expensive, around or over. Third, the traditional BlackBerry is really focused on one of the basic features – messaging. The same applies to Windows Mobile or Symbian mobile phones. To be fair, I must say that there are many third-party applications that are Windows Mobile are available. There is no shortage of applications. Then one may ask, why not the AppStore “concept at the center in the past so many years, since the availability of Windows Mobile phones. Back to the story.

Windows Mobile was an attempt by Microsoft to take market share from RIM in extending its dominant to reach their PCs and Windows / Microsoft Outlook as the basis for the mobile world. The whole “wow” factor with a Windows Mobile phone that is that you finally synchronize your e-mail, calendar and contacts on the air. The big “push email” capabilitiy why people want to buy a Windows Mobile phone. Moreover, gadgets for the duties of his limited BlackBerry main purpose was for messaging.

Even then it was a real pain, attachments on your BlackBerry. Windows Mobile is read for gaps in their Blackberries. Not only do I not need an enable pin / password for my BlackBerry (required to configure your Outlook username / password and domain), I can just my Outlook e-mail account on my Windows Mobile phone at all times. Playing attachments was much better on Windows Mobile. I could also buy third-party applications like Documents To Go for BlackBerry, while similar applications are available for the third reading of the tools available, they are in usually on a subscription model (If you remember, you can not download and save attachments from a BlackBerry at the time. You could not open it).

Fast forward to today. What is Apple • When Apple launched the iPhone 2G, Apple was not targeting enterprise users. There is a direct competition with Windows Mobile or RIM has to be avoided. Instead, it will directly consumers. Apple will leverage designed on its core competencies – has a phone that the Wow-factor as people, which is an iMac or MacBook and put the phone as an all-in-one for voice, video, pictures and music, as had. This is what an Apple is useful. Meanwhile, iTunes is already largely of Mac and Windows and people were used used to buy music and sync your iPod. Without doubt there would be some cannibalization of the iPod, but the increase was much larger. Apple iPhone would allow to make progress in the mobile world, and an advanced mobile 1.8 billion market by the end of 2007 (estimated by the Yankee Group report).

Apple has raised its ante in 2008 with the launch of the iPhone 3G, and this time, Apple is square in the Enterprise market with the announcement that the ability to make available to Exchange Push Mail. This is their addressable market to a certain prosumers “that are in two minds about using the iPhone as broaden the lack of Exchange push email. More importantly, the capstone strategy for the new Apple iPhone in its content and the iTunes ecosystem. This time, he announced what is available through iTunes AppStore. Free-applications. paid applications start as low as 0.99. This lowered the entry barrier for consumers, the different types of applications to try.

I would not mind paying a bit less for each application. Most of the applications were mostly games and tools utilities at the start, but companies increasingly adopt the iPhone, we see that software developers are now increasingly the integration of mobile applications on the iPhone in their timetables. I am sure that Apple would acknowledge that support user applications, more and more about the iPhone, it is less reluctant to switch to another phone and lost all applications that used or purchased. This liability very large customers. RIM should have understood, and therefore it is his first center luanching to support Blackberry OS 4.7 (which OS Storm). If you take a piece of the strategy for the Apple iPod, Apple is not resting on its laurels and cede market share. Apple updates the iPhone firmware (Just push will watch the time interval between the main firmware update 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 – It is shorter). Look in the coming months, as the competition will heat up. In the meantime, sit tight and keep ahead with the war.

While networking social will like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter has become so popular before the iPhone has stormed the market (let’s see if BlackBerry Storm will repeat this success), the iPhone has popularized this even more. Now I can have easy access to my “twittering” or update my Flickr or Facebook easily with a button on the iPhone. Types of iPhone applications, social networking, Twitter in particular, reflects the underlying trend. Well, even Sony Ericsson X1, a new group on Facebook. Storm will also come with a preinstalled application for Flickr and Facebook. Given the increasing popularity of social networking tools, I wonder why carriers (telcos) are not using this market or for customer support.

I think there is still much potential in social marketing media, the carriers are not eligible. I have never seen an airline that uses pro-active Blogs fulfilled, or to allow Twitter to product launches or upgrades or new use of social networking tools annoucements product or event. In the future, mobile phones become more powerful and applications that run on mobile phones as a key factor in creating customer stickiness. Transporters should this opportunity to work closely to take the handset manufacturers or software developers plan to install certain applications to it unique. Carriers must also be aware that customer service must have supporting hardware phone even if the carriers are really the first point of contact for customers. It is no longer good enough to get everything set up for retailers to sell phones. The airlines need to understand the customer needs and the right kind of phone the customer. It is true customer service.

  18. danielsan854 Says:

@MrPointyarrow No, they put out a software fix that displayed the signal more accurately. Before the iPhone would show 4/5 bars but the signal would be more in the area of 2/3.

The iPhone 4 problem is hardware based (dodgy antenna design) and so cannot be fixed with updates.
