In India, Google and Facebook to remove offensive content

Alongside nineteen other groups of the Internet, Google and Facebook have been reported in connection with criminal and civil court in New Delhi , which will determine if they are legally liable for content posted on obscene their sites by Indian users.

Google and Facebook have announced, Monday, Feb. 6, they had removed content may have an offensive on their sites in India and presented as evidence against them, without specifying the nature. It could s’ act of obscene images of religious figures and politicians leading. “This measure is consistent with Google‘s policy, in response to demands of justice” , told Agence France- Press Paroma Roy Chowdhury , the spokesman for Google in India.

Both groups have also submitted an application to the High Court in New Delhi to stop the prosecution, arguing they can not be held responsible for what users are online.

A judge of the High Court had warned last month that if the groups did not eliminate the content “offensive and shocking” , they would be blocked, “as in China” . In early December, the communications minister, Kapil Sibal , had promised to “implement guidelines and mechanisms” to remove the defamatory content. His announcement aroused the ire of Internet users.

The Minister had assured that the government supported free speech and opposing censorship, but some publications on the Internet were so offensive that no one would find acceptable, citing the example of faked photographs of religious or political figures naked.
