Microsoft, Nokia and Amazon interested in Research in Motion?

Microsoft and Nokia has initiated discussions with Research in Motion (RIM) about the future of the Canadian group, reports, Tuesday, December 20, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ, article fee).

The leaders of the three groups meet “regularly” to explore ways “to improve partnerships”, when the action of the manufacturer of the BlackBerry has reached its lowest in nearly eight years, says the WSJ, citing people familiar with the matter. Microsoft and Nokia “in recent months have flirted with the idea of a joint bid,” but nothing has been decided due to the complexity of the case, said the financial daily.

In addition, the co-CEO of RIM, Jim Balsillie, said to want to wait for the launch of the new BlackBerry range 10 – first announced for Christmas 2011 and the first quarter of 2012 – before engaging in serious discussions with potential buyers, told the newspaper sources close.

AMAZON also in the running?

These new phones should be based on the new operating system QNX. RIM leaders have also approached the mobile phone manufacturers like Samsung and HTC, to determine their interest in equipping their aircraft with this system, writes the WSJ, citing two people close to Canadian society.

RIM and Microsoft are already working, particularly through a partnership making Bing the search engine installed by default on mobile devices. The computer giant is also working with Nokia: an agreement earlier this year to devote Windows Phone as a primary operating system of Finnish phones.

According to Reuters, Amazon would have also recruited an advisory bank in the summer to think about a potential merger with RIM. But the group e-commerce has made no formal offer, said one source, quoted by news agency.
