Samsung Smart TV, Television can be so smart

With Smart TV and internet apps are coming on the TV – this could be an interactive hands-on the telly screen. Will that work really has Matthias Kremp tested on a super-thin Samsung model. Smart TV, which is the buzzword of this year’s International Consumer Electronics Fair (IFA) in Berlin. This refers to TVs that can do more than merely show the TV program. Smart they should be, just as smart phones can provide access to the Internet and expand with new features to apps. An upper-class members of this genus is network-ready Samsung TV UE46D8090, the praises of the producers as “The future of television.”

If the future looks like this device, then they should come quietly. Despite its 46-inch screen (117 inches) of 3-D ready TV looks lean and mean, weighs much less than we initially feared. He is only a few centimeters thick, the frame of the screen with five millimeters so small that you hardly perceive. The result of this design tricks: One has the impression that the image would float freely in space.
The image of the LED-TV, which also dominates 3D is excellent: even in the default rich colors radiate into the living room, and the black is really black. A light sensor adjusts depending on ambient lighting brightness. For me this is important because the sun in the afternoon and early evening with full force on the side of the picture surface and emits more otherwise I would have to readjust.

But it comes to TV in this test is not so. I want to find out what makes Smart TV for now and if you really want to have something at home. So I press on with “smart” labeled button on the remote and see how my TV world is changing. In the Smart Hub, such as Samsung calls its web interface, the current TV picture shrinks to a smaller window. Great, so I can bypass commercial breaks without missing the boat.

But above all I get from here to access the multimedia features – and those are few. So I can at the stroke of my music collection on your home network to access and use the TV as the over-sized MP3 player. This also works with videos and photos. It works well but only via cable network. About Wi-Fi, there are dropouts in high-definition video on a regular basis. I can also travel from the Smart to the electronic program guide (EPG) and access the VCR, the device offers as soon as you plug a USB hard drive.

The TV is really smart but only with additional small programs, called apps, some of which are pre-installed and some are rechargeable. Thus, there are apps for Skype – the ideal camera costs around 140 € – Twitter and Facebook. Moreover, the essential weather apps, several games and video applications, which lead to portals such as YouTube.

And there are apps for online video rentals as Maxdome. Especially the latter is a real appreciation, because it can be a lot of movies and TV shows in HD quality and either borrow in the original English version. The only drawback: Only the 100 most popular films, television series etc. are easily selectable with Maxdome. Everything you need to find more complicated than a search function that will be controlled by on-screen keyboard with the remote. A separate wireless keyboard also offers Samsung, but still costs by 120 euros. Bluetooth keyboards from other manufacturers will not accept the device, according to Samsung. Can operate the TV via suitable apps for Samsung smartphones and Samsung Tablets. We are seeing a new standard combination for the living room from the future: touch screen on your lap, LED screen on the wall.

Typing on the onscreen keyboard but works at least as complicated and time consuming as typing in web addresses in the web browser, but dominated the flash, but still not fun. Laborious and choppy, not only because of the address input, but also because it is slow and when scrolling.

Click when the red button is

As well, there are apps instead – and HbbTV, another feature that belongs in a Smart TV. HbbTV, hybrid broadband television broadcast, and is almost the reamed Teletext successor. If a station HbbTV content, which may be a red icon appears on the screen. If you click on the corresponding red button on the remote control, the respective HbbTV offer appears. The often mentioned as an example button on which you can order the coffee just shown, I’ve certainly never seen. Maybe I watch the wrong channel.

Is clear, however, that the quality and scope of the content offered via HbbTV fluctuated greatly depending on transmitter. While some at ARD and ZDF get access to each library and can watch all the films that are offered elsewhere for a short video snippets. Nevertheless, a filler for commercial breaks is plenty on offer here, some also offer goes far beyond that. Almost always, but I wish I could upload text and images faster.
Off to the Future

The speed can be determined to improve. But during the test phase, two software updates have been deployed to the test device. This also shows that the new TVs are more computers than watching TV. For them functional and speed are not set with the date of purchase, but can later be repeatedly extended and changed by update.

But even without further updates are UE46D8090 Samsung already has an impressive view on the future of what we will have once called television. If all manufacturers equip their smart TVs similarly well, they might still be a boom, such as smartphones are now experiencing it.
